NATSO BIZ BRIEF: The House Energy and Commerce Committee began consideration Sept. 13 of its portion of the Build Back Better Act, the Democratic budget reconciliation package. The portion of the bill that falls under the Energy and Commerce Committee’s jurisdiction includes a number of concerning provisions for fuel retailers and travel centers, especially with regard to the structure and eligibility requirements for grant programs to install electric vehicle charging infrastructure. In advance of the markup, NATSO, along with the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) and the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America (SIGMA), sent a letter to Energy and Commerce Committee members outlining the industry’s concerns with their portion of the bill and encouraging them to amend it accordingly. Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committee are not expected to accept substantial amendments during the markup, but it is possible changes will be made as the bill continues to move through the process. The Energy and Commerce Committee markup continues on Tuesday, and other House Committees will begin to consider their portion of the legislation as well.
