Federal Commercialization Amendment Fails

3/13/2012

A national effort to commercialize rest stops has been dealt a severe blow by retailers across the country. Colorado and Wyoming Senators both took a strong stand to protect small, community sustaining businesses from government competition. Your grassroots efforts sent a clear message to Congress that it is very bad public policy to commercialize rest stops, choosing state government interests over small business. Last Friday, many of the pundits were predicting this to be a razor thin vote going either way. The pundits continually underestimate the grassroots capabilities of retailers when they can unite behind an issue. Unfortunately, twelve Senators decided to vote the wrong way and we will need to provide more education for them going forward. The twelve Senators voting for the Portman amendment are: Ayotte (R NH) Carper (D-DE) Coats (R-IN) Coons (D-DE) Crapo (R-ID) Kyle (R-AZ) Lieberman (I-CT) Mc Cain (R-AZ) Murkowski (R-AK) Portman (R-OH) Risch (R-ID) Toomey (R-PA) Thanks again for all of your effort, and thanks to Senators Udall, Bennett, Enzi and Barrasso for sticking with us.
